Prison No. 5: 1980-84
Çayan Demirel · 97 min · 2009
Synopsis
This documentary reveals what happened in Diyarbakır Prison No. 5, where the most brutal state terror of our recent history was carried out after the military coup of 12 September 1980. It shows what kind of unimaginable systematic torture the state inflicted on all the prisoners, most of whom were Kurdish, and how Turkification policies were implemented. While the military officials of the time described the prison as a “military school”, the prisoners remember those years as the “years of savagery”. For them there was only one way to break the chains of this savagery: to resist or to sacrifice themselves. The prisoners fought to break the chains, and almost thirty years later “Prison No. 5: 1980-84” tells us what happened in the words of the witnesses.
